How to Install the Instagram For WordPress Plugin

Instgram for WordPress Plugin

Most plugins in WordPress are fairly straight forward to install but when I was first installing Instagram for WordPress, a plugin that makes a connection to your instagram account and shares the photos you modify, store and post on instragram to your WordPress site I found out otherwise.  Sounds pretty cool right?  Well, it is but the problem is that you actually need to do some work to set it up which is why I thought it was worth blogging about today to show you just how to do it to save yourself some time and possible frustration.

Instgram for WordPress - Widget interfaceAs with all other WordPress Plugins you will need to install this one first on your WordPress site.  And what you will NOT notice is some link or menu icon directing you to using it.  Where you can find it is when you click on the “Widgets” section of your site’s current active theme.  The widget will be called “Instagram” and you can drag it to the correct place you want it to appear on in your theme.

As you can see here once you’ve installed the plugin and you open the widget you see a number of settings to help you get your Instagram feed running on your WordPress site.  The two that I want to focus on are the Instagram client_id and Client_secret,  these are the two attributes that you will need from Instagram to ensure that your plugin is working correctly.

In order to get these ids you will need to first you to http://instagram.com/developer and click on the “Manage Clients” link at the top of the page.  Next, you will need to register a new client with the “Register a New Client” and when you do you will need to fill out the application name, description, website and OAuth redirect uri (which is provided in the widget on your WordPress site).  Lastly click the “Register” button to register your client and you are almost done.

The last thing you need to do is enter your Instagram client_id and Client_secret in the Instagram widget on your WordPress site.

Now after all this configuration work you are finally done.  Simply save the settings you’ve put in the widget and you are ready to go.  The hardest thing about using this plugin is the amount of setup required and for those of you who aren’t as technically savvy you could find it difficult to add to your WordPress site so I hope this article helps you out.
