How to Use Lockdown WP Admin to Make WordPress Secure

One of the most common challenges in running a website is keeping it as secure as possible.  I am going to show you a plugin that will allow you to secure the wp-admin/ directory.  Many times in the past countless websites have been compromised in various hacking and malware attempts but the Lockdown WP Admin plugin for WordPress you can lockdown WordPress.  Let me show you a few ways that you can use this plugin to secure your site.  Once you have installed and activated the “Lockdown WordPress Admin” plugin into your WordPress website you’ll notice the following navigation menu on the left side menu when you are logged into WordPress…

For the purposes of this exercise select the “Lockdown WP” option from the above mentioned menu and you will be greeted by the following screen when you do…

There are 3 particular options that you’ll notice on this page including Hide WP Admin, WordPress Login URL and Authentication.  Let’s talk about these options that you have for securing your WordPress website…

Hide WP Admin – When you check the checkbox “Yes, please hide WP Admin from the user when they aren’t logged in” what this means is that when this checkbox is checked it will hide the following path…

http://www.mywebsite.com/wp-admin

And after this is checked you will not be able access the wp-admin unless you are logged into WordPress.

WordPress Login URL – What this option provides is a way to customize the login URL for your WordPress website making it more secure and less obvious to attempts from potiential hackers.

HTTP Authentication – What this option gives is a way to encode during HTTP requests made during a login attempt.  It is disabled by default but you can set this option up on your own WordPress Login Credentials or Private Usernames and Passwords which you can also setup with this plugin under the “Private Users” option.
