Website Tip: Using Offsets to create Random Posts in StudioPress

In today’s website tip I’m going to show you how you can create a more randomized look to areas featuring your posts.  In this tip I’m going to show you how you can take a StudioPress theme and customize it. To start with you are going to need to buy a StudioPress theme or the Genesis framework as this tip focuses on working with those web technologies.  Once you’ve got this installed the first thing you are going to do is install your StudioPress theme and Genesis Framework.  Once this is done the next thing you will need to do is navigate to Appearance | Widgets and open the widgets section.

Now I was recently doing this using StudioPress’ “Smart Passive Income” theme but this could work for any StudioPress theme that they make today.  The next thing you will need is to drag and drop the “Genesis – Featured Post” widget into one of the sections.  Keep in mind for each post you want to appear in this section you will need to add the widget that number of times and in my case I added 4 because I wanted to show 4 posts from my blog at a time.

As you can see in the screenshot above the Genesis – Featured Posts widget has a “Number of Posts to Offset” field.  For each widget you add you are going to increment this number by 1.  So if you have 4 widgets from the first you are going to put the values 1, 2, 3 and 4 in their respective fields on these widgets.  The finished product looks something like this…
